"I hate mornings," my wife growled, walking into the
bedroom.
For years, Robert Peecher has entertained readers of The
Oconee Leader newspaper with his humor columns about the chaos of raising three
sons, and in "Four Things My Wife Hates About & Other Collected Stories" he
has for the first time collected some of these columns into a single volume.
This volume consists of stories from when Rob, with his wife
Jean, first encountered the horrors of having a child in middle school. When
children enter middle school, all their cerebral functioning comes to a
screeching halt and they are motivated purely by bad decisions, hormones and
peer pressure.
Adding to the chaos of these years, Rob and Jean had two
younger sons who were both in elementary school. They were (mostly) still
adorable.
In "Four Things," you can read about hot chicks with cheat
codes, the exploding tube of tooth paste prank and starting the school year
with a yawn. You can also find out why school teachers never stood a chance
against the magic of summertime and, of course, the four things Jean hates
about mornings.
If you want to feel better about your own family, you'll
appreciate "Four Things My Wife Hates About Mornings." If you have children, or
you were ever a child yourself, you'll relate to "Four Things My Wife Hates
About Mornings." And if you have a sense of humor about the chaos of raising
kids, you'll laugh out loud at "Four Things My Wife Hates About Mornings."

Even a blind pig finds an acorn every once in a while, which is my way of saying I stumbled upon this Georgia peach of a book pretty much by random chance. In it, this pig found many acorns, in the pants pockets of Robert Peecher Jr.'s sons and on almost every page. "Four Things" is a delight from cover to cover.Maybe I liked the book so much because I was a newspaper editor myself, who wrote a weekly column for years, while raising three children. But maybe the similarities between Robert Peecher Jr.'s experience and my own qualify me to declare his writing hits the nail squarely on the head. His wife and kids are never spared, but he skewers them in such a self-deprecating way, and with such an amusing felicity with words, that it is clear who the perpetrator is here. We get to know the Peechers almost as well as we know our own families, without the dirty laundry. Well, there's lots of dirty laundry, but it is literal dirty laundry, not metaphorical dirty laundry.
This book won't end world hunger or cure cancer, or teach you how to do anything more complicated than make the morning coffee. But it will show you that your kids aren't the only crazy ones, and it's OK to be a little stupid every once in a while. Oh yeah -- it will also make you laugh. A lot. Which is a better cure than any of us know. Did I say this book is a peach? It's better than peachy. It's Peecher.
